Knee Cartilage Treatment Study Self-Scheduler

Qualified participants:

• Must be 18-75 years old.

• BMI is no more than 35 [calculate here].

• Must have knee pain and/or knee osteoarthritis (OA) in one knee.
• Must be diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis.

• Must have tried conservative knee treatments (such as physical therapy, weight loss, injections, or pain medications) for at least 3 months without adequate relief.

• Must be willing and able to undergo a surgical procedure under general or regional anesthesia.

• Must be willing to commit to a 24-month follow-up with multiple in-person visits.

• Must be willing and physically able to follow a 12-week rehabilitation program after surgery, including at least 4 weeks of not putting weight on the knee.

• Can safely undergo an MRI (no pacemaker, metal implants, severe claustrophobia, etc.).

Answers Must Be NO: 

• Have you ever had any of the following procedures on this knee: MACI, ACI, OATS, OCA, or Agili-C?

• Have you ever had any of the following treatments in this knee: subchondroplasty (injecting bone substitute material), genicular nerve ablation (nerve-burning procedure for knee pain), genicular artery embolization, cryoneurolysis (freezing of nerves), a MISHA implant (a shock absorber implant placed inside the knee), or any other knee implant or device? 

• In the past 3 months, have you received any injections in either knee, such as: hyaluronic acid / gel injections (like Synvisc, Euflexxa, or similar), PRP (platelet-rich plasma), bone marrow concentrates, steroid injections (cortisone), or any experimental/investigational drug? 

• Have you had surgery on this knee within the last 6 months? Do you have a partial knee replacement (uni-compartmental knee replacement) in this knee? 

• Have you ever received radiation therapy to this knee? 

• Are you currently taking any blood thinners such as: warfarin (Coumadin), apixaban (Eliquis), rivaroxaban (Xarelto), clopidogrel (Plavix), or similar medications?

• In the past 6 months, have you taken any immunosuppressant medications such as cyclosporine (Cyclosporin A) or azathioprine (Imuran)? 

• Have you received chemotherapy in the past 12 months? 

• Have you ever received a stem cell treatment using cells donated by another person (also called allogeneic stem cell therapy)? 

• Have you ever been diagnosed with any of the following autoimmune conditions: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), Multiple Sclerosis, Sjögren’s Syndrome, Myasthenia Gravis, Addison’s Disease, Dermatomyositis, Pernicious Anemia, or Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative Colitis)?

• Have you ever been diagnosed with Gout, Pseudogout, Gouty Arthritis, or Fibromyalgia?

• Have you ever been diagnosed with HIV, Hepatitis (any type), HTLV, Syphilis, Hemophilia, Von Willebrand disease, Thrombocytopenia, or Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)?

• Have you ever been diagnosed with any of the following: Paget’s Disease, Ochronosis, Acromegaly, Hemochromatosis, Wilson’s Disease, or a genetic collagen disorder? 

• Have you been told you have any of the following in this knee: avascular necrosis (bone death due to poor blood supply), osteochondritis dissecans (a joint condition where bone and cartilage break off), a bone cyst, bone tumor, bone fracture, or osteonecrosis? 

• Do you have any vascular (blood vessel) or neurological (nerve) disorders affecting your legs or feet?

• Do you have diabetes with poor blood sugar control and an HbA1c above 8%? 

• Are you currently being treated with antibiotics given through an IV or injection for an active infection? 

• Do you have a known allergy to hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid (a substance commonly used in knee injections and skin care products)?

• Have you ever been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder or epilepsy (seizure disorder)? 

• Have you had any issues with substance abuse or alcohol abuse in the past 3 years? 

• Are you currently pregnant or breastfeeding? 

• Are you currently involved in a workers’ compensation case, personal injury lawsuit, or disability claim? 

Answers Must Be YES: 

• Have you been diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis by a doctor? 

• Are you willing to stop taking ALL pain medications (other than Tylenol/acetaminophen) at least 48 hours before each study visit?

• Are you willing to avoid any additional injections or procedures in your study knee for the full 2 years of the study? 

• If you are a woman who could become pregnant, are you willing to use effective birth control throughout the study?
