Diabetes Management Research Study

Qualified participants:

  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Has a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus for at least 1 year.
    • Must be on treatment with insulin.
  • Must be on treatment with both short acting (bolus) and long acting (basal) insulins.

Answers Must Be NO: 

  • Are you currently pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or not using birth control?  
  • Do you have any active implanted medical device, such as an implantable defibrillator or pacemaker? (Note: Passive implants like cardiac stents are okay. Commercial CGM devices like Dexcom or Abbott Libre are also okay.) 
  • Do you have a condition that requires or is likely to require an MRI scan? 
  • In the past 6 months, have you had a severe low blood sugar episode that caused you to have a seizure or lose consciousness? 
  • In the past 6 months, have you been treated in an emergency room or hospitalized for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA — a serious complication of diabetes)? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with gastroparesis (a condition where the stomach empties food too slowly)? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with or experienced any of the following: Symptomatic coronary artery disease or unstable angina, heart attack, mini-stroke (TIA), uncontrolled high blood pressure, congestive heart failure,  a history of cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)? 
  • Are you currently taking or likely to need any of the following during the study: Immunosuppressant medications, Chemotherapy, Blood thinners or anti-clotting medications (aspirin is okay), steroid creams or patches applied to the upper arm area.
  • Long-term antibiotics?
  • Are you currently being treated for a seizure disorder?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency (a condition where your adrenal glands don’t produce enough hormones)? 
  • Do you have any deformities, skin conditions, or other issues with your upper arms that might make it difficult to place or wear a small sensor under the skin? 
  • Do you have a known allergy to local anesthetics (numbing medications) or to steroids/glucocorticoids? 
  • Have you participated in another clinical study (drug or device) in the past 2 weeks, or are you planning to join another study during this one? 
  • Are there any other serious health conditions, recent substance use concerns, or other circumstances that might make it difficult or risky for you to participate in a year-long study involving occasional low or high blood sugar challenges in a clinic setting? 

Answers Must Be YES: 

  • Are you currently on insulin therapy?
  • If female of child-bearing potential are you currently on a form of birth control? 
  • Are you okay with having your fingers poked multiple times for blood sugar readings? 
  • Are you okay with having an IV inserted into your arm/hand/wrist at certain visits for blood draws?
