Cardiovascular Health Study

Qualified participants:

  • Age 40 to 79 years old
  • Have at least one of the following risk factors: diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, elevated Lp(a), current smoking, family history of early heart disease, or age over 65. 

Answers Must Be NO: 

  • Have you ever been diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD), or have you ever had a cardiac stent placed or bypass (CABG) surgery on your heart arteries? 
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AFib), or do you have a heart rhythm problem that is difficult to control such as a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia) that your doctor has had trouble managing with medication? 
  • Do you have a pacemaker? 
  • Do you have any of the following serious heart conditions: severe heart failure (Class III or IV), a significant heart valve problem (such as a narrowed or leaky valve), unstable chest pain (unstable angina), or uncontrolled high blood pressure above 180 mmHg even with medication? 
  • Have you had a coronary CT scan (CCTA) in the past 12 months? 
  • Are you currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant in the next 3 months? 
  • Do you have a known allergy to iodine, contrast dye, or CT scan dye? 
  • Do you have severe kidney disease, stage 4-5 
  • Do you have a known allergy or serious reaction to beta-blockers (heart rate-slowing medications such as metoprolol) or nitroglycerin? 
  • Do you have severe asthma, very low blood pressure, or have you taken medication for erectile dysfunction or pulmonary hypertension (such as Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, or Revatio) in the past 24 hours? 
  • Is there any reason you would not be able to lie flat on your back for about 15–20 minutes? For example, severe back pain, breathing problems when lying flat, or severe claustrophobia? 
  • Are you currently being treated for cancer, or are you receiving palliative care? 
  • Do you require supplemental oxygen at rest or during activity due to a lung condition (such as severe COPD or a lung scarring condition)? 
  • Do you have cirrhosis or serious complications from liver disease? 
  • Do you have a condition affecting your hearing, vision, movement, or thinking that would make it difficult for you to use a smartphone and smartwatch independently? 
  • Do you have a history of feeling faint or dizzy when standing up — called orthostatic intolerance or autonomic dysfunction — that requires you to take medication for it? 
  • Do you have any of the following at or near your wrist that could interfere with wearing a smartwatch: a known skin condition such as scleroderma or active Raynaud’s syndrome, an amputation of part of the arm or hand, tattoos, large moles, or scars where the watch would sit, or a known allergy to silicone, fluoroelastomer, or watch band materials? 
  • Do you work for a company that makes or sells medical or fitness wearable devices (such as ECG monitors, fitness bands, or sleep trackers), or are you a technology journalist, blogger, or reporter? 
  • Have you previously participated in a study sponsored by Apple? 
  • Do you have a medical condition that prevents you from fasting for 12 hours (no food or drink except water) before a blood draw? 

Answers Must Be YES: 

  • Do you have a personal smartphone that is compatible with eSIM transfer? This means: an iPhone 11 or newer with iOS 26 or later, OR an Android phone compatible with eSIM and Android 16 or later, on one of these carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon? 
  • Do you have reliable Wi-Fi at home, and do you expect to remain in an area with sufficient Wi-Fi or cell coverage each night throughout the study (approximately 16 weeks)? 
  • Are you willing to use the study-provided smartphone as your primary phone for the entire study period (approximately 16 weeks)? 
  • Are you willing and able to wear one or two smartwatches simultaneously for at least 10 hours per day, 7 days a week, for the duration of the study? (You will wear two watches for the first 3 weeks, then one for the remaining 13 weeks.) 
  • Are you willing and able to come into the clinic for an in-person enrollment visit and a CT scan appointment, and complete an end-of-study call? 
  • Do you have an iCloud account that you do not share with anyone else, and are you willing to not share your study smartphone or smartwatch with anyone during the study?
