Weight Management Medication Research Study

Qualified participants:

  • Must be 18-75 years old
  • For patients with Type 2 Diabetes: BMI must be 27 or higher [calculate here]
  • For patients without Type 2 Diabetes: BMI must be 30 or higher OR 27 or higher with at least one of: high blood pressure, high cholesterol/triglycerides, diagnosed sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease [calculate here]
  • Must have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise in the last 6 months without success 
  • Must be able to provide medical records 

Answers Must Be NO: 

  • For non-diabetics- Are you currently taking insulin, a sulfonylurea such as glipizide, glimepiride, or glyburide, or metformin for blood sugar control? 
  • For Type 2 diabetics – Are you taking anything other than metformin or an SGLT2 inhibitor such as Jardiance, Farxiga, or Invokana?
    • Do you have a history of diabetic ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar state/comahypoglycemia or hypoglycemia unawareness in the past 1 year? 
    • Do you have a history of proliferative diabetic retinopathy, diabetic maculopathy, or nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy that required acute treatment? 
  • In the last 3 months, have you used any of the following weight-loss or diabetes medications: Ozempic, Wegovy, Victoza, semaglutide, Mounjaro, Zepbound, tirzepatide, Saxenda, liraglutide 3 mg, or any other GLP-1 medication or injectable weight-loss drug?
  • In the last 3 months, have you used any prescription or over-the-counter weight-loss medications or treatments such as: Qsymia, Contrave, Xenical, Alli, orlistat, phentermine, or weight-loss teas or supplements? 
  • Have you ever had weight-loss surgery or a weight-management procedure or are you planning to have any of these procedures in the next year? 
  • Has your body weight changed by more than 5% in the last 3 months? For example, if you weigh 200 lbs, that would be a gain or loss of more than 10 lbs. 
  • Have you received an organ transplant, or are you currently waiting for an organ transplant such as: Kidney, liver, or heart transplant?
  • Have you participated in a clinical research study and received a study medication within the last 30 days? 
  • In the last 3 months, have you been hospitalized for a heart attack, stroke, unstable chest pain, or heart failure? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with a type of heart failure called NYHA Class IV — meaning you have symptoms even at rest, or a serious heart rhythm disorder? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with active hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or HIV? 
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas?
  • Have you or any blood relative ever been diagnosed with medullary thyroid carcinoma, a specific type of thyroid cancer, or a condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with any type of cancer in the last 5 years?
  • In the last 3 months, have you started taking any of the following types of medications: Tricyclic antidepressants, Antipsychotics, mood stabilizers?
  • In the last 3 months, have you been taking oral or injected steroid medications or in the next 12 months, do you expect to need long-term steroid treatment — more than 2 weeks — for an autoimmune condition such as: Prednisone, methylprednisolone, or dexamethasone for an ongoing autoimmune condition like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Are you currently taking any medications prescribed specifically to help move food through your digestive system, such as metoclopramide or Reglan?
  • In the last 2 years, have you been diagnosed with or treated for a serious psychiatric condition or in the last year, have you been hospitalized or had an urgent visit to the emergency room due to a psychiatric condition.
  • Have you ever attempted suicide? 
  • Do you have a known problem with drug or alcohol use or, in the last 3 months, have you used marijuana including edibles, oils, or CBD products?
  • Have you ever been diagnosed with an eating disorder such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder? 
  • Have you been diagnosed with severe gastroparesis, which is very slow stomach emptying, gastric outlet obstruction, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome that significantly affects your daily life? 
  • Do you have any serious liver, kidney, or digestive conditions beyond what we have already discussed that your doctor has told you could affect how your body processes medications?
  • Are you currently pregnant, planning to become pregnant in the next year, or currently breastfeeding? 
  • Have you ever had an allergic reaction or serious side effects from a GLP-1 medication such as Ozempic, Victoza, or Trulicity? 

Answers Must Be YES: 

  • This study involves clinic visits over about 11 months, taking a daily pill, following a lifestyle program, and completing questionnaires. Are you willing and able to commit to all these requirements? 
  • Contraception use:
    • Women of non-childbearing potential must have one of the following;
      • Permanent sterilization such as hysterectomy or bilateral oophorectomy 
      • Medically documented ovarian failure 
      • Postmenopausal
    • Women of childbearing potential must have one of the following;
      • Agree to refrain from donating ova or attempting to get pregnant during the study until at least 3 days after the end of treatment
      • If sexually active and engaging in heterosexual intercourse, MUST agree to use 2 methods of effective contraception
    • Male participants must:  
      • Agree to refrain from donating sperm during the study until at least 3 days after the end of treatment. 
      • If sexually active with a partner of childbearing potential, must use a condom in addition to a highly effective contraception
